iPad Thoughts

Well, the announcement of the iPad was the other day, and I cannot help but think of all the possibilities.

I am all about efficiency and like having the ability to work on my projects from pretty much anywhere. This maximizes my abilities, minimizes my idle time, and maximizes the amount of time I can spend with my family and doing things I really want to do.

Since getting my iPhone, I have the ability to do so much more than I could do with my previous smart devices. I'll name a few of the applications and give a brief summary of how I use them in everyday life. In the coming weeks. I plan to review and elaborate on the benefits of these applications.

  1. eWallet - Password Management application that syncs with PC or Mac version of the application.
  2. iThoughts - MindMapping application that imports/exports with Freemind. Great for drawing out thoughts intuitively. I use for planning out development projects.
  3. Timewerks - Project Time Tracking and Billing Application. Great for small businesses to get the most our of their time. Helps me to bill more accurately for time spent and get the invoice sent of in a timely manner.
  4. DocsToGo - Word and Excel compatible iphone editor. Syncs with specified folders on my PC, which allows me to have important files with me at all times.
  5. FTPOnTheGo - Great FTP app that allows for downloads/uploads, and text editing straight from the iphone.
  6. Mocha VNC - Allows me to connect to my home PC or Clients PC's from anywhere. I use the VPN capabilities for improved security.

There are too many to cover here, but these are apps that I use on a daily basis.

Now you may be asking, What does this have to do with the iPad. Well. I anticipate, most of these applications will work better with more screen real estate to work with.

The iThoughts app is great for starting the design of a Mindmap, but once the map gets to the point of having 100's of nodes, it gets to be difficult to work with due to the small viewing area. The iPad will bridge that gap and in many ways supersede PC capabilities due to the more intuitive user interface.

DocsToGo will benenfit for the same reasons. Now I will be able to see my spreadsheets and word docs in a more native and readable format. I'm not sure if this is a replacement for the PC, but it's definitely better than the smaller iPhone screen for "real work".
